Discover Slovene rail heritage

About Slovenske železnice Railway Museum

Slovenske železnice Railway Museum is more than just a collection of exhibits; it offers a glimpse into a time when watching a steam train chug into view was a special, awe-inspiring moment, and when train stations served as vital hubs of the world. The former steam locomotive shed in Ljubljana Šiška in the city’s centre is home to many majestic steam locomotives – the oldest one dating to the early 1861 – now resting quietly after many years of active service.

For more than 40 years, the museum has preserved Slovenia’s railway history, providing a place to make lasting memories. Each rail exhibit carries a story of its own – about people, new discoveries, journeys and advancements which left a mark on towns and communities alike.  As a place where history is entwined with feelings and educational value, Slovenske železnice Railway Museum is all about creating special moments regardless of one’s age and walk of life.

The central part of the museum houses the roundhouse – a semi-circle structure for servicing and storing locomotives – surrounding the turntable, which is a mechanized bridge unit designed to spin locomotives 360 degrees. The adjacent building B hosts a permanent exhibition covering the station master’s office, track building and maintenance, expansion of the network through time, and the historic telecommunications equipment, signalling and staff uniforms. The place also houses a small collection of rail-themed art pieces.
